McCook Public Schools is a class B sized school district in the southwest corner of the state. Our mission is to equip all students to succeed, and we believe we are well on our way to accomplishing this goal. We have found that maintaining a laser like focus on student achievement results in high levels of performance by all students. We have also found that investing in teacher development has been and will continue to be essential to our success for all students, because well-trained teachers have proven to have a profound effect on student growth and development.
McCook Public Schools has also been strong in activities and competes at a very high level. Although we are the smallest school in the Greater Nebraska Activities Conference, we compete well and win conference titles in several activities on a regular basis. Research indicates that students who are involved in activities have a closer connection to the school, which results in higher academic achievement, so we have made a concerted effort to encourage every student to join a club or sport.
McCook’s location is isolated and rural; however, only a small portion of its valuation is in agricultural land. Our valuation increases have been modest, compared to neighboring school districts, over the last several years, which has maintained our dependence on state aid to successfully manage and operate our school system. State aid enables us to operate effectively and deductions or slow growth to our state aid funding directly impacts our ability to support educational programs and student achievement. State aid funding directly impacts children and their academic opportunities and success in McCook.
